Brokeback Mountain

Recently I had the opportunity to watch Brokeback Mountain. It is one of the best films I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Brokeback Mountain is much more than the "gay-cowboy love story". (So many critics have delighted in sneering those words, as if the gay theme made the story something less than what it is, which is sheer brilliance.)

But as much as I love the movie, I adore the short story even more. Annie Proulx's original "Brokeback Mountain" is stark, unrelenting and unapologetic. Maybe love doesn't conquer all, but it does cross all boundaries, and by God, that's enough, because...well, because it has to be.

I still cry when I read it.

Read the story here: Brokeback Mountain, as originally published by The New Yorker.
